Wet 'n Wild Megalast Summer 2014 Review

Welcome back!

Today, I'm going to review the summer collection for the Wet 'n Wild Megalast line. I know this is not readily available anymore, but I still wanted to put this up. I still made notes and swatched all of them, just didn't get it up or done in time before they were gone. I'm hoping to finish with the fall one soon, and have it up while they are still in stores!

There were six polishes in this collection. The collection was called "All Access Pass." I liked the overall color choices when I first saw them in stores. They were bright and vibrant, and really caught my eye. They only thing that I originally thought was bad was that they were all very basic and common colors. People who are true nail polish junkies probably have polishes like these already. But, I was surprised to find some differences in them. I was actually kind of happy to see such basic colors in a collection, because I feel like every company is trying to make their colors "different," but all of those "different" colors end up being the same.

One of the best parts about this collection and all of this line is the price! These polishes only run $1.99 each, so I picked up the whole collection for about $12.00! Sometimes, you can even find these on sale, where they might be buy one get one 50% off, or even just $0.99 each. It definitely is nice if you are trying to add to your collection, or trying to decide whether or not to try some new color, because it doesn't cost a fortune to buy.

Contact High
Coats: 4
Formula: Jelly
Color Family: Green
This was much thinner than I expected. When I first looked at the polish in the bottle, I thought that it was going to be a standard, green cream polish. It was by no means cream. It was a full on jelly. It was very thin, and even after 4 coats, I could still clearly see my nails through it. I've heard that some people can get this to work, but I had a hard time with it. It would have probably been thicker after another coat or two, but I didn't want to spend that kind of time on it.

A Venice Day
Coats: 4
Formula: Jelly
Color Family: Yellow
I was surprised to find that again, this was a jelly. It was just a basic yellow color, but a jelly formula. The formula was a bit streaky, and very very sheer. I would kind of call this a mustard color, because after several coats, the color darkens and deepens, so the yellow is not as bright anymore. If I'm going to wear a solid yellow, I'd prefer a cream. But, if you are looking for a fun jelly polish, this one definitely is it.

Love Me Some Muscles
Coats: 3
Formula: Jelly
Color Family: Peach
This was an odd color. I originally thought it was a solid, orange colored cream polish. But once I had it in different lights, and applied it to the nails, I found that it was more of a peach colored jelly polish. It wasn't as sheer as Contact High or A Venice Day, but it was still a jelly polish. It was a pretty color, but not something I would pick to wear alone.

Coast to Coast
Coats: 2
Formula: Shimmer
Color Family: Blue
Although it's hard to see in the pictures, this polish had a gorgeous shimmer to it. I was surprised to find that, because it didn't transfer that way in the bottle. I loved this color. It was very pigmented, and only took me 2 coats. It is definitely going to be used a lot.

Trippin' on the Boardwalk
Coats: 3
Formula: Cream
Color Family: Purple
This is a light, summery purple. It was a cream formula, but I found it to be just a tad watery and sheer. It was build-able, though, and after 3 coats, I couldn't see through it. I liked the color a lot, and have already used it multiple times since swatching it.

Beat of a Generation
Coats: 2
Formula: Cream
Color Family: Pink
I loved this color, but of course I did, because it's pink! The formula was really good, and the color is very vibrant and just gorgeous. I do own a lot of pinks, and I felt like this was just a typical one that you can find a lot of places. If you own a lot of pinks, you could probably skip this one. But if you don't own many pinks, or you just love pink nail polish like me, this is definitely worth the money.

Overall, I did like the whole collection. The brushes are good, and I've always liked these brushes. The price makes it even better, because you are getting a quality nail polish for such an amazing price. The formulas are all good, I just don't care for the jellies, but I never care for jelly polishes. The winners of this collection are definitely Coast to Coast and Beat of a Generation. If you can find these still, definitely pick them up!

Essie Neons 2014 Review

Hey guys! I know that I'm way behind, but I've been trying out all of these polishes over the summer, and wanted to note how I felt about them since I already tried them and made the notes about them!

This collection has six polishes. They are all supposed to be neons, hence the name. It was titled "Too Taboo." They were advertised to be paired with Essie's Blanc as a base coat. I tried all of these polishes with and without a white base coat to do a comparison.

First up, Vices Versa. This is a bright, lime green polish. I did one coat of Blanc on the ring and pinky fingernails. On the white base, I used 3 coats, and without a base, I used 4 coats. The first coat was super sheer, but the second coat definitely made it look better. The white base for this one I would call unnecessary, but it does sort of boost the appearance and vibrancy. I did like this color, it reminded me of green candy.

Too Taboo is a dark, but vibrant pink. I used two coats of white on the same nails, and two coats of color on top of that. On the nail without a base, I used two coats as well. The nails with a white base were brighter, but the ones without were pretty bright as well. Adding it up, I need 4 coats of polish, versus 2 coats. I don't think the tiny bit of extra brightness is worth all of the extra work. The color was beautiful, and the formula was good. This was definitely bright, but I wouldn't normally classify this as a "neon."

Sittin' Pretty was a light purple, almost a neon version of a lilac. I used two coats of Blanc on select nails, and no base on the others. I needed 3 coats on the white, and 3 coats off the white. On the nails with the base, I liked the way it looked better, but I don't know if it was necessarily more vibrant, or brighter. For the extra work, again, I would probably call this unnecessary for the white base.

I'm Addicted was a light, neon blue. I would call this a true neon color. On the nails with a base, I used two coats of Blanc, and three coats of the polish. Without a base, I used three coats of polish. I could definitely tell a difference in the look on the nails with a base and without it. The ones with the base were much more vibrant. It was a very thin and sheer color. I thought it was pretty, though. The finish was semi-matte, but I top coated it.

Chills & Thrills was a dark purple-blue shade. It was very watery and thin for me. I used two coats of Blanc with two coats of color on top, and on the nails without a base, I used three coats. I would not classify this color as a neon. It was too dark, and I didn't feel that it was vibrant enough. After I finally got enough coats on, it looked smooth, but before that, it was horrible.

Finally, we have Serial Shopper. This polish required two coats of Blanc plus two coats of polish, or three coats of polish. The shade on the white was brighter, but I felt that it was more orange with the white base. I feel like this polish is the same color as Resort Fling by them, but a watery version. In some lighting, it was more orangey, and in some lighting it was more pink. Overall, this was probably my least favorite color of the collection.

Overall, I thought that this collection was not the best formulations I've ever used. The colors were pretty, and I liked most of them, but I felt like I had to work with them. These polishes can still be purchased on their website, or you may be able to find them at Walgreens still, as I still see them in mine over with the rest of the polishes.

31 Day Challenge: Day 31

Welcome back!

Today's theme: honor nails you love!

It's the final challenge! I actually completed the challenge just one day late, but I haven't had much time to post, so this post is later. I'm proud of myself for getting this done this year, even if I was scrambled and late in the end. I finished, which is much better than I did last year!

I had trouble coming up with something to do. I wanted to do something quick and easy, and not one that would require waiting for different portions to dry, or to get different details on. I decided finally to honor @nailstorming from Instagram. She has done so many different minion nails, and they are all so cute and amazing! I went with the basic minions, but she has done some pretty clever ones for different months and holidays throughout the year. You can find her on Instagram, and on her blog here.

For the base color, I used Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Sizzlin' Saffron. The overalls were done with Salon Perfect Nail Art in Blue Skies. The grey for the minions goggles was Zoya Carey, the white was Sally Hansen Insta-Dri OMGhost, and the black details was Salon Perfect Nail Art in Black Ink.

I'm happy with the way these turned out! I definitely think that there is room for improvement, but they are much better than the first time I tried a minion which was two years ago, and I only did it on one nail...so much progress!

Most of my posts can be found on Pinterest, and I also post the pictures an announcements of blog posts on my Instagram (@glitternails89).

31 Day Challenge: Day 30

Welcome back!

Today's theme: inspired by a tutorial!

I was inspired by the sugar spun nails tutorial. I have seen several of these before, but I have no idea who the original creator was. Please comment if anyone knows!

For this design, I used four polishes for the spun sugar part. All four colors were from the Wet n Wild summer collection. They are the Wild Shine line, so they only cost $0.99 each! On top of that, they are great polishes in general. From index to pinky finger, they are Ferris-Wheel Romance, Chambray Showers, Spitfire, and Gyp-Sea Green. The thumb used all four.

The basic technique is to apply a base color first. Then, you want to place drops of polish somewhere, and let it start drying. Once it gets sticky and stringy, you take a toothpick, dotting tool or anything like that, and drag strings on to the nail. The idea is simple, you just have to get the hang of it!

The base for this design was Sally Hansen Insta-Dri White Pick It Fence. I love this polish, but it turns out that I didn't need the base color to be that fast drying! This was tricky to figure out, but it got easier. I learned that you definitely need to put a lot of polish down. You also need to let it dry for a long time before doing it. It needs time to get goopy, and mine took a while to do that.

I loved these nails. This was an amazing affect. I did not want to take it off! I really want to try it again but with some different colors. I think there could be some really cool designs using this technique.

It definitely looked cooler without top coat, but I wanted to make sure it was dry, and so I put on the top coat. Unfortunately, I didn't get a shot without top coat. It didn't mess with the design much, thankfully, because the polish was pretty much completely dry.

31 Day Challenge: Day 29

Welcome back!

Today's theme: inspired by the supernatural!

I was honestly dreading this day. I didn't complete the challenge last year, and this day was part of the reason why. I had no idea what to do. I hate spooky/creepy things, so this day is horrible for me. I realized after doing it and exploring other peoples more, that there are some good ideas out there. Something to keep in mind for next year! :)

I did small, cute ghosts, which is also perfect for Halloween which is coming up! For this nail art, it was super simple. I used Hot Designs, which are the brush and pen combo! I've seen these in my local Walmart, CVS, and Target. I think you can also get them online.

It was short and sweet for this one! Simple is good sometimes, though!

31 Day Challenge: Day 28

Welcome back!

Today's theme: inspired by a flag!

Today, I was inspired by more than a flag. I was replicating a design done by Chalkboard Nails. I love it! Here is the link to her original art. It is inspired by the American Flag. Hers was done using textured polishes, but I just used regular polishes for mine.

All of the polishes I used were Wet n Wild Megalast polishes. The base was LAC - My Mani? This is from their newest fall collection. The blue was Coast to Coast, which was from the summer "All Access Pass" collection, and the red was Heatwave.

I followed what she did, so definitely check out her page. Basically, I painted the white, let it dry and top coated it. Then placed the striping tape on my nails, and sponged on the blue and red together! It was super easy! I thought it was cute, too. Very patriotic, but the colors made it look "fall ready" patriotic. If that makes sense.
